It was the climax scene. The Hero had stabbed
the villain. The reason – he had kidnapped his wife and was about to marry him
on cruise boat. Alas, the hero’s arrival changed everything. But something else
also happened in the theatre hall when we were watching this scene. There was a
pin drop silence. Ideally, the audience should have whistled and clapped on the
villain’s death. But they were not. Some of the girls were crying on is death …
That movie was DARR and the dying villain was SHAHRUKH KHAN. This film even soured the relationship
between SUNNY DEOL, the Hero and Late YASH CHOPRA, the Director, as he felt
that the director gave him a raw deal and all the sympathy was swept away by
the Antagonist. Such was SHAHRUKH’s power that a similar role in a previous film,
where he again plays the antagonist, was a hit. Historically no actor would dare to do the same role back to
back. That would be a disaster for one’s career. Not in this case though. In
SHAHRUKH’s case, a Star was Born...
Today, Shahrukh Khan is one of the biggest success
stories in the industry today. Born in New Delhi on 2nd November 1965 and
brought up in the coastal city of Mangalore for the first five years of his
life, Shahrukh made his debut in the Hindi Film Industry about 2 decade ago
with Deewana (1992). This film that won him his first Filmfare Award for
Best Debut Male.
In the same year, later, Shahrukh starred in Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman.
But, the turning point in his career, however, came with the earlier mentioned two
films in 1993 where he played characters with grey shades – Yash Chopra’s Darr
and Abbas-Mustan’s Baazigar.
Though 1995 was a landmark year in his career. Two
of the year’s biggest blockbusters, Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun and
Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge released and the latter went
on to become one of the biggest blockbuster in the history of Indian cinema and
firmly established Shahrukh as the biggest superstar in the country. DDLJ
is still running at Maratha Mandir in Mumbai! By the end of 2015, it will
complete its 20 year run.
In the following years, SRK gained iconic status
with romantic films like Yash Chopra’s Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Subhash Ghai’s
Pardes and Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which remains one of
the biggest hits of his career.
The beginning of the 2000 though was probably the
toughest of Shahrukh’s career with the media pitting him against Hrithik Roshan
who made a successful debut in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. The two had a epic
clash at the box office during Diwali in 2010 when Hrithik’s Mission Kashmir
released on the same day as SRK’s Mohabbatein. While Mission Kashmir
opened to a better response initially, it was Mohabbatein that eventually won
the Diwali clash.
In the last decade or so, Shahrukh consolidated his
status as one of the most bankable stars in the country with successful films
like Devdas, Chalte Chalte, Kal Ho Na Ho, Main Hoon Na
and Veer Zaara. The actor was unable to maintain his success streak when
Swades and Paheli failed at the box office. But this was followed
by 10 back-to-back successful films that started with Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna
and continues with his latest blockbuster Chennai Express. Below is SHAHRUKH’s
Box Office Record*.

SRK has maintained this consistency and has carried
it forward to the next decade. He has made it to the Top 2 six times and
Top 5 eight times. He has been unsuccessful just once and also had no
release one year. But, as described above, SRK has been challenged several
times since 2006. But even with the onslaught of new stars, SRK is the only
KING KHAN of Bollywood.
